秦始皇34年，秦始皇采用丞相李斯的意见，把上书分封的淳于越看成私家学诽谤朝政，下令将《秦纪》以外的史书全部上交焚毁，书生卢生等人不满，结果秦始皇下令逮捕了460多名方士和儒生，在咸阳挖坑活埋他们。
