战国后期，秦国经过商鞅变法后日益强大，其他诸侯国害怕秦国强大就采取“合纵”的办法联合抗秦。秦惠王任用魏国人张仪为相，到各国宣扬“连横”的策略，离间六国，威胁和引诱六国依附秦国。在张仪的活动下，六国联盟马上四分五裂。
