东汉末年，刘表把新野送给刘备，让刘备抵御曹操。同时准备让次子刘琮继承自己的位置，这让长子刘琦感到处境比较危险。刘琦请诸葛亮到自家后花园高楼上吃饭，命人把楼梯撤去，虚心向诸葛亮求救，诸葛亮要刘琦去当江夏太守脱险。
