基本解释随风而落，有的飘在茵席上，有的落在粪坑里。比喻由于偶然的机缘而有富贵贫贱的不同命运。也指女子堕落风尘。
出处《梁书 儒林传 范缜》：“人之生譬如一树花，同发一枝，俱开一蒂，随风而堕，自有拂帘幌坠于茵席之上，自有关篱墙落于粪溷之侧。坠茵席者，殿下是也；落粪溷者，下官是也。”

南朝梁代时期，子良与无神论者范缜在一起谈人生富贵之事，问富贵与因果的关系。范缜回答说：“人生就同一树花，虽然同处于一根树枝上，突然刮起了大风，花瓣有随风飘到富贵人家的座垫上，也有飘到人家厕所里的，因果在起作用。”
