基本解释长物：多余的东西。再也没有别的多余的东西。形容因贫困而空无所有或因节俭而东西极少。也作“身无长物”、“一无长物”。

出处南朝 宋 刘义庆《世说新语 德行》：“后大闻之，甚惊，曰：‘吾本谓卿多，故求耳。’对曰：‘丈人不悉恭，恭作人无长物。’”

别无长物的典故

东晋时有个读书人，名叫王恭。他生活俭朴，不图享受，人们都说他将来定能做一个有用的人。

有一年，王恭随父亲从会稽来到都城建康，他的同族王忱去看望他，两人在一张竹席上促膝谈心。

谈着谈着，王忱忽然觉得身下的席子非常光滑，感到很舒服。

他心想王恭从盛产竹子的会稽来，一定带了不少这样的竹席，就称赞了一番这张竹席，并希望王恭能送他一张竹席。

恭听了，毫不犹豫他将下这张竹席赠送给王忱。王忱千恩万谢地走了。其实，王恭只有这张竹席。送掉后，他就改用了草席。 王忱知道这情况后，十分惊讶，觉得过意不去，就去找王恭表示歉意。王恭笑笑说：“您不太了解我，我王恭平生没有什么多余的物品。”
