欲盖弥彰的典故

春秋时期齐国大夫崔杼掌握着齐国的军政大权。后来他去吊唁齐国棠邑大夫棠公，迷恋上了棠公的妻子棠姜，便不顾众人劝阻，娶其为妻。齐庄公很好色，他明知棠姜已改嫁崔杼，仍和她私通。崔杼知道后，便借口有病不上朝。庄公乘探视崔杼之机私会棠姜。崔杼便设计将他杀了，并立景公为齐国国君，自己当上了丞相。齐国负责撰写国史的人比较正直。他不顾崔杼多次暗示，以一个历史家的角度，据实记述，写道：“崔杼杀了他的君主。”这可是十恶不赦之罪，会被天下人所耻笑。崔杼一看，当然恼怒万分，心想你不笔下留情，我也不给你活路。于是，就杀了那个史官。可他不知道欲盖弥彰的意思，继任的史官同样如此，秉笔直书。崔杼又想，既然杀一个不能堵住你们的嘴，又何妨再杀一个，就不信你们不怕。他把这个史官也杀了。可是第三任史官仍坚持原则，崔杼也知道杀人解决不了问题，只好就此作罢。所以后代阅读历史的人看到这一节时就用这句成语来形容崔杼想使自己的丑事得以掩盖，但实际结果却适得其反的愚蠢做法。
