刘宗周（1578—1645），字起东，别号念台，汉族，明朝绍兴府山阴（今浙江绍兴）人，因讲学于山阴蕺山，学者称蕺山先生。他是明代最后一位儒学大师，也是宋明理学（心学）的殿军。他著作甚多，内容复杂而晦涩。他开创的蕺山学派，在中国思想史特别是儒学史上影响巨大。清初大儒黄宗羲、陈确、张履祥等都是这一学派的传人。刘宗周的思想学说还具有承先启后的作用。当代新儒家学者牟宗三甚至认为，刘宗周绝食而死后，中华民族的命脉和中华文化的命脉都发生了危机，这一危机延续至今。
