译文
江岸远处，平平的沙滩，夕阳照着归路，归路上晚霞灿烂。一只孔雀临水自赏，敞开的翠尾七彩斑斓。路上的脚步似把它惊动，谁知它认得行人开屏依然。
注释
南乡子，词牌名，又名《好离乡》、《蕉叶怨》，唐教坊曲，原为单调，有二十七字、二十八字、三十字各体，平仄换韵。单调始自后蜀欧阳炯。南唐冯延巳始增为双调。冯词平韵五十六字，十句，上下片各四句用韵。另有五十八字体。双调五十六字，前后阕各四平韵，一韵到底。
归路：回家的路。
自怜：自爱。金翠尾：毛色艳丽的尾羽。
临水：言孔雀临水照影。

南乡子·岸远沙平鉴赏
这首词咏的是难过风光中的原野暮色。朝与暮作为特定内容可以有昂扬向上和颓废没落的寓意，但作为自然景色却都很美，旭日和夕阳，朝霞和晚霞，绚丽而富于变化，都能激起人们的美感。在古典文学中写暮色的名句、名作是不少的，欧阳炯能寓奇于变，写景抒情，与前人不相因袭，具有艺术魅力，他写南国新异景物，是出于妍雅之笔。这一首像一幅旅人暮归图。
“岸远沙平，日斜归路晚霞明”，词一开头虽无一字写河，而河已突现在画面。从远岸、沙滩，人们不难意识到附近有一条鱼归路曲折并行的河流。岸之“远”，“沙”之平都是人的感觉，所以词虽未直接写人而旅人也自然突现在画面上了。然后词人着一“归”字，使他的活动内容更为具体，而且能引起人的丰富联想。至于“日斜”、“晚霞明”，既点明了归途的时间，又渲染了景物的色彩。应当说这两句十一个字已把旅人暮归的背景表现得颇有画意了。下面三句则是画面的中心，是近景，是特写，它使暮景带上了鲜明的个性特征：“孔雀自怜金翠尾，临水，认得行人惊不起”，这景象只有南国才有。
孔雀的珍奇美丽，自古为人称道。屈原《九歌》描写少司命华丽的车盖，已提到以孔雀羽为饰。欧阳炯写的不是人工饲养的孔雀，而是野生孔雀。他写旅人忽见河边孔雀开屏，它那徘徊四顾的神气，俨然自怜其尾。孔雀长期未受人们侵扰，与人相狎，所以尽管起初被旅人的脚步声吓了一跳，但看看旅人又马上镇静下来，并没有拖着长尾飞去。
