洛阳处天下之中，挟崤渑之阻，当秦陇之襟喉，而赵魏之走集，盖四方必争之地也。天下当无事则已，有事，则洛阳先受兵。予故尝曰：“洛阳之盛衰，天下治乱之候也。”
方唐贞观、开元之间，公卿贵戚开馆列第于东都者，号千有余邸。及其乱离，继以五季之酷，其池塘竹树，兵车蹂践，废而为丘墟。高亭大榭，烟火焚燎，化而为灰烬，与唐俱灭而共亡，无馀处矣。予故尝曰：“园圃之废兴，洛阳盛衰之候也。”
且天下之治乱，候于洛阳之盛衰而知；洛阳之盛衰，候于园圃之废兴而得。则《名园记》之作，予岂徒然哉？
呜呼！公卿大夫方进于朝，放乎一己之私以自为，而忘天下之治忽，欲退享此乐，得乎？唐之末路是已。(唐之末路是已一作：矣)
书洛阳名园记后译文及注释
译文
洛阳地处全国的中部，拥有崤山、渑池的险阻，算是秦川、陇地的咽喉，又是赵、魏争着向往的地方，是四方诸侯必争之地。天下如果经常太平无事也就罢了，一旦有战事，那么洛阳总是首先遭受战争。为此我曾说过：“洛阳的兴盛和衰败，是天下太平或者动乱的征兆啊。”
正当唐太宗贞观、唐玄宗开元盛世时，公卿贵族、皇亲国戚在东都洛阳营建公馆府第的，号称有一千多家。等到后期遭受动乱而流离失所，接着是五代的惨痛破坏，那些池塘、竹林、树木，被兵车践踏，变成一片废墟。高高的亭阁、宽大的楼台，被战火焚烧，化成灰烬，跟唐朝一起灰飞烟灭，没有留下一处。我因此曾说：“馆第园林的繁盛或毁灭，就是洛阳兴旺或衰败的征兆啊。”
况且天下的太平或动乱，从洛阳的兴衰就可以看到征兆；洛阳的兴衰，又可以从馆第园林的兴废看到征兆，那么《洛阳名园记》这作品，我难道是徒劳无益、白费笔墨的吗？
唉！公卿大夫们现在正被朝廷提拔任用，放纵一己的私欲，为所欲为，却忘掉了国家的太平或动乱的大事，想以后退隐了再享受这种园林之乐，能办得到吗？唐朝最后覆灭的情形就是前车之鉴啊！

挟（xié）：拥有。
崤（xiáo）：崤山，在河南洛宁县西北。
渑（miǎn）：渑池，古城名，在今河南渑池县西。崤山、渑池都在洛阳西边。
受兵：遭战争之苦。
开馆列第：营建公馆府邸。
五季：五代（指五代十国时期）。
候：征兆。
徒然：白白地。
进于朝：被朝廷提拔任用。
治忽：治世和乱世。

李格非（约1045~约1105年）北宋文学家。字文叔，山东济南历下人，女词人李清照父。李清照《上枢密韩公诗二首》诗序中称“父祖皆出韩公门下”，可知其父祖辈皆为“蚤有盛名，识量英伟”（《宋史·韩琦传》）的学士韩琦的门下士。幼时聪敏警俊，刻意于经学，著《礼记说》数十万言。宋神宗熙宁九年（1076年）中进士，初任冀州（今河北冀县）司户参军、试学官，后为郓州（今山东东平）教授。宋代有兼职兼薪制度，郡守见他清贫，欲让他兼任其他官职，他断然谢绝，表现了廉洁清正的风节。
