译文
一天，猫头鹰遇见了斑鸠，斑鸠问它：“你将要到哪儿去？”
猫头鹰说：“我将要向东迁移。”
斑鸠问：“是什么原因呢？”
猫头鹰说：“村里人都讨厌我的叫声，所以我要向东迁移。”
斑鸠说：“如果你能改变叫声，就可以了；你要是不改变叫声，那么即使你向东迁移，那里的人照样会讨厌你的叫声。”
注释
枭(xiāo)：又称鸺鹠(xiū liú)，一种凶猛的鸟，猫头鹰。
逢：遇见，遇到。
鸠（jiū）：斑鸠、雉鸠等的统称，形似鸽子。
子将安之：您打算到哪里（安家）。
子，古代对对方的尊称，表示“您”。
将，打算、准备。
安，哪里。 之，到。 安之，即“之安”，去哪儿。
东徙（xǐ）：向东边搬迁。 徙，搬迁。
何故：什么原因。 故，原因。
乡人皆恶（wù）我鸣：乡里人都讨厌我的叫声。 皆，都。 恶，厌恶。 我，这里指代猫头鹰。
以故：因此。 以，因为。 故，原因，缘故。
更（gēng）：改变。
犹（yóu)：仍旧，还。

刘向（约前77—前6） 原名更生，字子政，祖籍沛郡（今属江苏徐州）人。西汉经学家、目录学家、文学家。刘向的散文主要是秦疏和校雠古书的“叙录”，较有名的有《谏营昌陵疏》和《战国策叙录》，叙事简约，理论畅达、舒缓平易是其主要特色。
