译文
成一对比目鱼，做一双连理枝，心里该多么的甜。像新婚夫妇那样恩爱缱绻，更是称心合愿。可画船毕竟驶开了，把我一人抛留在这边，我只能竭力远望，想望见那关西的旅店。黄河水滔滔不绝，流不尽我心中的思念；中条山高耸入云，隔不断相思绵绵。我常忆起夜深时分，万籁俱静，他来到我的跟前。见面时诉几句温柔的情话，离开时留一首诗篇。这一切永远牢记在我心里，直到死的一天。
注释
乐心儿：使人心情快乐。比目：即鲽鱼，旧说此鱼必须两两相并才能游行。连枝：异根而枝干通连的树。
肯意儿：合意。燕尔：新婚夫妇相悦的样子。
关西：潼关以西。
中条山：山脉名，在山西省南部、黄河北岸，全长约三百公里。

作者任职山东佥宪（司法长官）时，爱慕当地的一位名妓金莺儿，两人如胶似漆。后来改任陕西行台御史，不得已分别，就写了这支散曲寄赠给她，而内容则是代金莺儿立言。旧时妇女识字不多，由文人代为捉刀写情诗是常有的事。但本篇将金莺儿对自己的思念写得如此细腻，也可见两人相知非比一般。
上支〔醉高歌〕起首两句写两心相悦的快乐，反衬出下文离别的痛苦。“比目连枝”是两人的盟誓，“新婚燕尔”是两人的憧憬，难怪当离别骤然来临，画船载着心上人前往遥远的任所时，女主人公不甘心相信“人独自”的现实，要遥望千里之外的“关西店儿”了。“人独自”与“比目连枝”、“新婚燕尔”成一对照，“抛闪”的痛苦滋味自不言而喻。而女主人公首先想到的是关心男方沿途的起居，这种感情只有在心心相印的恋人间才会产生。
由“遥望”二字，引出了下支〔红绣鞋〕的“黄河水”、“中条山”，这正是“画船”一路经过的途程。对于女主人来说，水远山长却另有一番意味。“黄河水流不尽心事，中条山隔不断相思。”天造地设的自然屏障，竟催生了天造地设的相思名句！前句是刻骨铭心永在的柔情，后句是海枯石烂不改的信念。
唯因山水阻隔而思情不断，望不见GREn/ target=_blank class=infotextkey>情人的踪影，女主人公才会堕入了深沉的回忆，借助往事的追怀来排遣寂寞。也是在自己独个儿冷清的情形下，夜深人静，他悄悄来到了身边。“来时节三两句话”，是因为两情脉脉，用不着多余的语言。“去时节一篇诗”，是因为两心欢悦，止不住爱的喷涌。这两句回应起首的“比目连枝”、“新婚燕尔”，却因别离的既成事实，而显得既甜蜜，也苦涩。女主人公却发了狠，“记在人心窝儿里直到死”，因为这是她唯一珍贵的慰藉了。这一步步细腻而缠绵的感情，当得上“柔肠百转”的评语；而全曲均以脱口而出的家常语言表出，便更觉情真意真，贴近生活，因而更能打动人心。
乔吉有《水仙子·手帕呈贾伯坚（贾固，字伯坚）》：“对裁湘水縠波纹，援皱梨花雪片云，束纤腰舞得春风困。衬琼杯蒙玉笋，殢人娇笑韫脂唇。宫额润匀香汗，银筝闲拂暗尘，休染上啼痕。”可见贾固是位绮罗丛中的风流郎君。但这并不妨碍他对金莺儿的倾心相爱，据《青楼集》记载，他正因作了这首《醉高歌过红绣鞋》而遭到弹劾丢了官。一个御史对青楼女子这般忠诚不贰，又写出如此纯情的曲子，的确是难能可贵的。
顺便一说，贯云石有《红绣鞋》曲：“返旧约十年心事，动新愁半夜相思。常记得小窗人静夜深时。正西风闲时水，秋兴浅不禁诗，凋零了红叶儿。”本篇中的《红绣鞋》，“心事”、“相思”、“时”、“诗”的用韵次序都与之相同，“常记得夜深沉人静悄自来时”更与贯作相似，当非偶然的巧合。作者风流情种，青楼常客，对情词小曲不会陌生，作此篇时忆及酸斋乐府，借作依傍，是并不奇怪的。又《梨园乐府》载无名氏《红绣鞋》一首：“长江水流不尽心事，中条山隔不断情思。想着你夜深沉人静悄自来时。来时节三两句话，去时节一篇词。记在你心窝儿里直至死。”全同本篇，最明显的差别不过是“黄河”改成了“长江”，“诗”改作了“词”。这显然是在民间流传中，好事者记录时的差错。由此也可见出本篇在社会上的广远影响。
