吾少时读《醉乡记》，私怪隐居者无所累于世，而犹有是言，岂诚旨于味耶？及读阮籍、陶潜诗，乃知彼虽偃蹇，不欲与世接，然犹未能平其心，或为事物是非相感发，于是有托而逃焉者也。若颜子操瓢与箪，曾参歌声若出金石，彼得圣人而师之，汲汲每若不可及，其于外也固不暇，尚何曲之托，而昏冥之逃耶？
吾又以为悲醉乡之徒不遇也。建中初，天子嗣位，有意贞观、开元之丕绩，在廷之臣争言事。当此时，醉乡之后世又以直废吾既悲醉乡之文辞，而又嘉良臣之烈，思识其子孙。今子之来见我也，无所挟，吾犹将张之；况文与行不失其世守，浑然端且厚。惜乎吾力不能振之，而其言不见信于世也。于其行，姑分之饮酒。

译文
我在年轻的时候，读王篑的醉乡记，心里面很奇怪那隐居的人，既然和世界没有什么牵挂，为什么还说这种话，难道说真的是贪吃那酒吗？到后来读了阮籍、陶潜的诗，终知道他们虽然洒脱，不愿同世人交接，但是他们的心，终究不能平，偶然碰见那事物的是非，他就感触起来，把酒来做遁世的托辞罢了。那颜子住在一条陋巷里，只有一箪的饭，一瓢的汤。曾子唱起歌来，声音好像是从金石里发出来的，他俩寻到了圣人做老师，急急忙忙的要想学他，还觉得来不及；对那外面的事情，没有工夫去计较了；那里还会有借着醉乡做逃遁处的道理呢！所以我很哀怜那醉乡的人，不曾逢着好时候。 建中初年，天子即位，很想按照贞观开元年间的政治，做一番大事业，朝庭上官，个个上奏疏，讨论时务，这时候那醉乡的后嗣，又因为所说的话太直，丢掉了官。我读了醉乡的文词很哀怜他，又很敬重那良臣的刚烈，总想认识他的子孙。现在你肯来见我，就算是没有什么才华，我也要协助于你，况且你的文才，你的品行，很能继承家风元气，浑浑然即端方又敦厚，只可惜我的力量很薄弱，不能够提拔于你，而我的话，又没有什么人相信。没有其他的法子了，只好趁你走的时候，请你吃上杯水酒。
注释
《醉乡记》：作者王篑，字无功，隋唐时代的隐逸诗人，仕途不顺，归隐山林，嗜酒成癖，能饮五斗，著五斗先生传及醉乡记，是王秀才王含的先祖。
偃蹇：困顿、失志。
颜子：颜渊。
箪：盛饭的圆形竹器。
金石：金，钟鼎彝器。石，碑碣石刻。金石指用以颂扬功德的箴铭。
圣人：孔子。
汲汲：形容努力求取、不休息的样子。
曲：把麦子或白米蒸过，使它发酵后再晒干，称为曲，可用来酿酒。此处指酒。
建中：唐德宗年号。
丕绩：大功业。
无所挟：就算是没有什么才华。
张之：协助他。
文与行：文章与品行。

韩愈（768～824）字退之，唐代文学家、哲学家、思想家，河阳（今河南省焦作孟州市）人，汉族。祖籍河北昌黎，世称韩昌黎。晚年任吏部侍郎，又称韩吏部。谥号“文”，又称韩文公。他与柳宗元同为唐代古文运动的倡导者，主张学习先秦两汉的散文语言，破骈为散，扩大文言文的表达功能。宋代苏轼称他“文起八代之衰”，明人推他为唐宋八大家之首，与柳宗元并称“韩柳”，有“文章巨公”和“百代文宗”之名，作品都收在《昌黎先生集》里。韩愈在思想上是中国“道统”观念的确立者，是尊儒反佛的里程碑式人物。
